Get Higher Education to avoid losing future jobs to AI- JHS And SHS Students told

Mr Stephen Tindi, lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and Director at the Africa Centre for Media and Financial Literacy (ACMFL), has advised students to further their education to the highest level possible to avoid losing their future jobs to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He mentioned this at an online conference for all boys in public and private Junior High and Second Cycle Schools in the Tema West Municipal, which was held on Monday, the 22nd of November, 2021. The Ghana Education Service organized this seminar to commemorate Boy Child Day. The theme for the celebration was “Zero Tolerance for Artificial Intelligence”.

In his presentation titled “Artificial Intelligence and You”, Mr Tindi stated that Artificial Intelligence is taking specific jobs in certain sectors; therefore, the students must strive to receive quality education and go up the educational ladder, so their jobs won’t be affected by the rise of AI.

“Artificial Intelligence is taking jobs in customer service, and it’s even taking jobs some writing jobs, it’s taking jobs from factory workers, it’s taking jobs from typists and secretaries, so people are losing jobs based on the competencies of AI. So that means that you will have to remain in school and receive quality education and move up as high as you can go so that Artificial Intelligence will not take over the job that you do in future.”; he said.

He also cautioned the students against their over-reliance on Artificial Intelligence as it can make them lazy.

“Over-reliance on Artificial Intelligence can also make us lazy. Imagine your phone is at your beck and call, and you don’t even have to type; you just say ‘Call Mum’ and the phone will call mum. Set the alarm, the phone will do it for you, your car will drive you to work, and when you come to work, everything is automated. These kinds of things tend to make human beings lazy”.
